Ohio window tint law, explained by a Bellville tint shop
How dark can you go?
Last reviewed: October 2026
Ohio front side windows must let in at least 50% of light, the windshield at least 70%, with a dark top strip allowed. Rear side windows and back glass can be any darkness with outside mirrors on both sides. Mirrored film is banned. Every reading gets a plus or minus 3% tolerance.
Window by window.
| Window | Legal minimum | What we recommend |
|---|---|---|
| Windshield | 70% or lighter (plus or minus 3%). Top strip above the AS-1 line or top 5 inches can be any shade | Clear or 70% for heat, or a dark top strip for glare |
| Front side windows | 50% or lighter (plus or minus 3%) | 50%, the darkest street-legal front |
| Rear side windows and back glass | Any darkness. Back glass darker than 50% needs outside mirrors on both sides | 20% for a clean look, 5% for full privacy |
| Film type | No reflective or mirrored film. No red or yellow film | Non-reflective, non-metal film |
Is 35% tint legal in Ohio?
On the rear side windows and back glass, yes. On the front side windows, no. Ohio requires at least 50% light through the front sides, and 35% lets through less than that.
Is 20% tint legal in Ohio?
Only behind the driver. 20% is legal on the rear side windows and back glass, as long as you have outside mirrors on both sides. It is not legal on the front side windows or the windshield.
Can I tint my windshield in Ohio?
Yes, with limits. The windshield must let in at least 70% of light. A darker strip is allowed above the AS-1 line or across the top 5 inches, whichever is closer to the top.
Who gets the ticket, the driver or the shop?
Both can. Ohio law makes it an offense to drive a vehicle with illegal tint and also to install illegal tint on a vehicle. That is why we don't install front film darker than the legal limit on street vehicles.
Do off-road UTVs and equipment follow these rules?
These rules cover vehicles driven on public roads. A UTV, tractor or machine that never goes on the road can go darker. If it is plated and driven on the street, the street rules apply.
